And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. 23 And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, 24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” 26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” 28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

Thoughts to consider

Jesus’ main ministry was preaching and teaching, the healings and miracles naturally followed. We of course know the reason why Jesus spoke with authority but when he first started visiting the various synagogues it would have been an amazing thing to hear Him speak with authority, but then to command a demon to be gone, and it obey, would have been even more amazing.

•           I don’t want to labour the point but it keeps hitting me again and again that we need to pray for our leaders who preach and teach the word of God. They have been commissioned by Jesus so they have His authority which is an awesome but very sobering responsibility.

•           You have this authority too as you speak to others. Ask God to guide your words as they contain life and power!

•           Think about the words you speak, God can use them to break into people’s lives. Believe that He will use you today for His purposes.

•           Pray that Jesus’ fame will spread in your town or city

Father I thank you for our leaders who preach and teach your word. Give them insights as they prepare and fill them with your Holy Spirit. Help me too, wherever I go today to realise that I am able to speak words of life, freedom and deliverance. May the name of your dear son spread throughout our land, in His precious name I pray, amen.
