40 And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” 41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” 42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. 43 And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, 44 and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” 45 But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.

Thoughts to consider

There is so much in these few verses. Firstly that Jesus is approachable. Lepers were not allowed anywhere near non-lepers, they were the real outcasts of society, but this one was so persistent and so full of faith that he pressed right into Jesus.

· Are you desperate for a touch from Jesus? Press right in, in faith, believing He will bless you

Secondly, the compassion of Jesus always moves me. Our God is not passive and un-feeling, it is a mystery and a wonderful thing to contemplate that our creator God can be moved. Do you come to Him wondering if He is willing? He is always willing, ready to touch and bless you, believe in that today.

Jesus sent the leper to the priest so that he could then re-enter society. This was according to the law of Moses, the priest would authenticate and declare the man clean. He could now get a job and get himself out of poverty (Lepers had no means of income). So Jesus was not only providing for the man physically but practically as well. Jesus cares about every area of your life. What do you need? Come to Him now.

This miracle came at a cost to Jesus. He had told the man not to tell anyone except the priest and yet he was so excited he told everyone he met. Jesus’ movements were now severely restricted and He was not able to effectively continue His mission of preaching and teaching. I don’t believe He was playing some game of reverse psychology where if He told the man not to say anything He was secretly hoping he would.

· Do you ever do things for God that He hasn’t asked you to do? We need to be so wise in our dealings with people, sometimes out of our exuberance we can say far too much and put people off. Keep asking God for wisdom every day.

Father, it never ceases to amaze me that my prayers and my faith can move you to act, I thank you that you care for me passionately and want to get involved in every aspect of my life. Thank you that you provide all my needs on a daily basis. Help me to be wise in my dealings with people today, help me to hear from you and walk in the steps you have planned out for me. All this I ask in the wonderful name of Jesus, amen.
