20 Then he began to denounce the cities where most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent. 21 “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You will be brought down to Hades. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. 24 But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you.”

25 At that time Jesus declared, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Thoughts to consider

Can you imagine physically following Jesus around when He lived on earth, witnessing miracle after amazing miracle, seeing demonised people released and those bound up with infirmities or mental illnesses set free, listening to amazing teaching and witnessing a compassionate God bring love and joy everywhere He went. It’s amazing to me that not everyone believed Him, in fact it seems that whole towns didn’t.

Not trusting in God is serious business and Jesus demonstrates the seriousness by pronouncing some pretty fearful judgements.

· Have you repented of all your sins or are there some you still hold onto? Repent and give them to God now

· Thank Jesus that He has chosen you and has revealed his great grace and mercy to you. Come to Him with a thankful heart and a fresh determination to follow Him today and in the days ahead.

· Are you burdened with cares at the moment? Give them to Jesus and receive His rest. Don’t hold any back but give them all to Him

· Think about Why Jesus’ burden is light, how is it different to any other burden you are made to bare?

Prayer

Father I thank you once again that You have chosen me, You have revealed yourself to me. Help me to come to You as a little child with simple child-like faith. I place my trust in you today and gladly take up the instruction to take up Jesus’ yoke which is so much easier than the ones I burden myself with or other people give me. I ask all this in Jesus’ holy name, amen

  2. v28-30 is the text that sits beside me every day at home. So meaningful and always stirs my heart.

  3. Wow. Above comments, date and time. Still my favourite passage and so helpful every day.
